What a Career in Cosmetology Means for You

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Choosing a cosmetology career means aspiring to make clients feel beautiful for a living – either through styling, cutting or coloring hair, applying makeup, selling cosmetics, or giving manicures and pedicures. These are just a few things that a cosmetology career will involve. So if you think that beautifying people is your calling and that you want to break out from the conventional career paths, studying cosmetology will suit you best.

Regardless of which cosmetology career you choose, training is not optional. It is a step toward obtaining your license to practice cosmetology. While training to become a nail stylist will generally take less time, a full time career in cosmetology will typically take 9 months to complete. Those who wish to pursue a cosmetology career must be at least 16 years of age, must hold a GED or a high school diploma, and must pass a licensing exam.

A career in cosmetology is quite a storied one. The concepts of styling hair and applying makeup are centuries old. The career is primarily service-oriented and established to make each client feel their best. It can be a labor intensive job, with quite a bit of standing still or sitting.

When enrolling in a cosmetology course, you don’t have to choose your specialization immediately. Try out a holistic course first – dabble in makeup, hair, skincare, and nails. This way you can determine what your strengths and weaknesses are, and eventually, you can personalize and shape your career.

Making Sure the Beauty School You Choose is Cutting Edge

When applying to beauty schools, you want to look at schools that are knowledgeable about the latest techniques and trends in hair styling, nail design, makeup application, and whatever trade you are learning. You want to ensure that when you obtain your license that you can market yourself as someone who can achieve all these looks for your clients.

A cutting-edge beauty school will offer courses on practices that are just becoming popular as well as commonly used techniques. Schools, like Beauty Schools of America for example, offer courses in new age massage therapy and how to achieve popular, edgy makeup looks. In offering a variety of courses, a school will give you options as to what area of the beauty industry you choose to specialize in, and not just limit you to hair or nails.

Another indication that a school is up-to-date is the technology it will train you in. The courses will offer you training in innovative computer software that salons are using to keep track of clients and do accounting. These sorts of skills will make you marketable once you obtain your license and are out in the real-world.

Also look for schools that will offer you professional development after you graduate. As hair and makeup trends are always changing, your skill set will have to evolve with the times as well.

You want to obtain the best training when learning how to be a beauty professional. Make sure the school you attend is cutting edge, and you won’t have to worry about obtaining a job after graduation.
