Students were judged by a panel that consisted of: Osvaldo Perez (BSA Regional Director of Education & Training), Elsa Gonzalez (BSA Assistant Regional Director of Education & Training), Felicia Parker (BSA Regional Web & Social Media Coordinator), and Mercedes Pedraza (BSA Miami Campus Director of Education).  As a special treat, Ms. Maggie Senra (BSA Executive Vice-President) made an appearance to show her support to the students. Students from other programs were also in attendance to support their fellow classmates.

All participants did a great job and it was a challenge for the panel of judges to narrow it down to just three. But the winners are as follows: 3rd Place – Maura Moraga, 2nd Place – Elizabeth Toledo, and 1st Place – Galina Arseni.

The following students participated: Galina Arseni, Lidia Borges, Ines Echevarria, Lana Garcia, Maura Marage, Elizabeth Toledo, and Megan Quirk. The Instructor that put the entire competition together was Jackie Velez (BSA Makeup Instructor).

About Masquerade Masks:

Creating masquerade masks has been around for centuries. The tradition has been credited to have begun in the streets of Venice, Italy.  The earliest documented use of the masquerade mask comes from a 1268 ordinance passed that prohibited masked men from throwing rotten eggs at women.  Venice had annual carnivals that served as a pre-lent celebration.  Participants would wear marks and colorful costumes. It is unclear why this tradition began, but some speculate that it was to hide the identity of the participants.

Around the 14th century, royals began to have masquerade balls. During this period, Venice was one of the wealthiest and most powerful cities in the world. Dances involving masks became popular and countries began to call these types of celebrations “Venetian Masquerade Balls.”  The popularity of these types of balls comes and goes as centuries pass.
